Finisterra Piano Trio

Last night I went to the Camerata Musica concert given by the Finisterra Piano Trio from Seattle. I’d not heard of this group before and they are relatively new on the scene having just formed in 2003. The artists in the group, Tanya Stambuk (pinao), Kwan Bin Park (violin), and Kevin Krentz (cello), are all excellent musicians in their own right and each have an impressive resume. The program consisted of Beethoven’s Trio in Bl flat Major, Opus 11, Dvoraek’s Trio in E Minor, Opus 90/B166 “Dumky”, and a new composition by Daron Aric Hagen (commissioned for the Trio), Piano Trio No 4: Angel Band.

The execution of all of the pieces was flawless. Finisterra was simply in-sync with each other. You call tell when a group has chemistry. All of the artists have a level of physical expression and you can see that they are just enjoying every moment of their performance, just a joy to watch. This carries over into their musical expression and each piece of the evening has a life of its own. Beethoven never disappoints as you would expect. The Davoraek I had not heard before and was six “fleeting thoughts” inspired by Eastern European folk music, but of his own composition. The gem of the evening was the work by Hagen, an American composer who has studied with other greats such as Copland and Burnstein. The work chronicled the life if the matriarch of the family who commissioned the work. The first half of the work centered around a Southern hymn (remicent of some of Edgar Mayer’s work) and they migrated in to a purely modern work. Quite good, you can hear it for yourself on Finisterra’s website.

I expect a bright future for this ensemble. They are young and eager to share their passions with audiences and you should catch one of their concerts if you have a chance.

Mozart and McKay

Filed under: Event — Tyler @ 2:42 am

After 2 months in the Tri-cites of Washington I am discovering that the area does have some cultural offerings, as you’d hope for an area that has about 150,000 people. Somebody has to enjoy something outside of fish, golf, watching TV, running your ATV around the desert etc. So I went to a concert of the Mid-Columbia Symphony for a taste of what the area has to offer. I will say in short that I was pleasantly surprised, the group is pretty good. Their offering was titled “Mozart and McKay.” The McKay part is Bill McKay a homegrown pianist who is also the Dean of Arts at the local community college.

At first I was a bit suspicious of the event, after all how many orchestras do you know of play in a high school auditorium. Also the program was a bit of a hodgepodge. Two Gershwin pieces Cuban Overture and An American in Paris; mixed with Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G Major (K. 453) and the Overature to The Magic Flute; and a setting by a local electro-acoustic-improve group Strings Attached (not to be confused with No Strings Attached from Blacksberg, VA).

That’s an odd mix, but they did a good job and it fit. McKay is a solid pianist for both classical and jazz. For the jazz part I would not mind hearing Strings Attached again, if I were in the right mood. For the orchestra in the big picture they are a very good community orchestra. Technically they were very sound, but I will say that I have heard better musicianship from other groups (they were a bit “stiff”). In the end I’d say that I got my $24 worth and I always like to support local music efforts. I’m interested to hear what the Walla Walla Symphony http://www.wwsymphony.com/ has to offer as well as other area small ensembles. For those interested in my exploration of regional cultural diversions have a look at my “diversion” calender .

My Friend’s Winter Wedding

Filed under: Event, Outing — Tyler @ 4:38 am

My friends Jen and Jim decided to have their wedding in the Winter, real Winter. By “real Winter” I mean the middle of February, on a mountain in Stowe, VT. If you know them it will all make sense.

Hometown crowd

Filed under: Event — Tyler @ 10:27 am

Last night I went to the Dresden Dolls CD Release Party at the Orpheum Theater downtown for their new album Yes, Virginia. There’s really nothing like a hometown crowd. The Dolls started performing in the area about 5 years ago and have steadily build an audience. The Orpheum was packed and the audience was gracious and wonderful.. Boston might be the only place the Dolls could pull such an audience, but it was well earned. Other shows I’ve done to in the area of undefinable rock/pop/alt/punk area have been your typical 18 - 30ish crowd, this one you saw all types and ages. From parents bring their kids, to middle aged couples, to the 50 something guy in the wheelchair up front. The Dolls Brigade was there in full force as well, of course. Sometime I just love this city.

Dolls live shows don’t disappoint. But, I will say they are not for everyone. Some people have commented that the Dolls really aren’t that talented and if they didn’t put on the whole 1920-30s cabaret/punk/sideshow act that they would just suck completely. They are a package deal and now need to take the whole thing in before you make a judgement. There’s a lot of talent there and it’s more than artist putting on a show and being all pedantic and pseudo-intellectual.

The show was MCed by Tyler Frye, wonderful freak with warm up by Humanwine and Porsches on the Autobahn. I missed Autobahn, but Amanda Palmer citied them as being amazing. Even Miss Saturn was there. Then we get to the concert. Two moments, they are recording a Leonard Cohen cover for a close friend’s wedding and can’t agree on what key the song is end. By the third try they get it and the audience is with them all the way. I’ve never seen “I Love Rock’n Roll preformed with 8 girls (as in females 7 to around 14) belting out the lyrics. Well, the Dolls and Girl Authority did it proving they they all have sense of humor.

This is a rambling mess, but I had a good time and you missed a fantastic show.
