Read this bit from the past

I need to air this out before I try and put the finishing touches on the introduction to my dissertation. We get so involved in our daily lives that many times we miss the larger picture. We get into the phase that our time passes quickly and our vision narrows. We fail to see what is right in front of us.

I recently had the opportunity to watch “Why We Fight,” a new documentary highlighting the growth of the American role in the world since WW II thought the buildup of our military influence and national goals. It’s one of these films that asks just as many questions as it answers. It makes you think, not by telling you what you are seeing, but by showing you what you haven’t or perhaps couldn’t see. The writer does point fingers, but not to anybody specifically. In fact most of the fingers are pointing into the mirror.

A start point for the film is President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s farewell address to the nation in 1961. I was aware that President Eisenhower had coined the term “Military-industrial complex,” but I didn’t know the exact source. This address is it. He says more though. Click through and I have pulled out some excerpts that I found interesting in retrospect. I suggest that you read the whole thing and see “Why We Fight” if you have a chance.
