I was talking with a friend of mind and the conversation shifted to a discussion of units. I relayed my story of buying cheese in England (I think it was a Safeway in London). Like in the us you could buy the cheese pre-packaged, this was weighted in kilograms (maybe for easy export to the continent). The cheese I wanted was at the deli counter, so it had to be ordered. I asked the man behind the counter for a “pound of cheese.” He answers, “money or weight.”
Then my friend counters with his “units story.” While calling Sigma (a bioscience chemical supplies company) he was asking the price for the 1/2 liter size of a chemical. “We don’t have a half liter size sir. We only carry 50 mL and 500 mL sizes for that product.” My friend figured that the 500 mL size was close enough asked for its price available all while trying not to keep his calm.
