ASMS

Filed under: Outing — Tyler @ 6:47 pm

This year the American Society for Mass Spectrometry is being held in Nashville, TN at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. The resort is 20 minutes outside the city. At first I thought this would be lame. Well, I was mistaken. This place has 5 conservities (yes, a big greenhouse) all with gorgous plantings. Each is set up like a courtyard with some rooms facing inward. You don’t even have to go outside. I’ve been refering to it as the “BioSphere”. Bad part is that since the have you inside they feel free to charge premium prices, though you do get quality.

One funny bit. There are little signs in the rooms asking guests to turn off lights and TVs when not in use. They will even recycle your daily newspaper, only change bedding every 3 days (unless requested otherwise), and not swap out towels unless you put them in the tub. All environmentially conscience things. But how much enery does it take to air condition a place with 5 huge glass roofs and enough space for about 5,000 people?

On a bookshelf

Filed under: Normal boring stuff — Tyler @ 10:19 pm

Say you’re sitting on a bookshelf. You have a long tail, whiskers, and beady little eyes. Suddenly you hear a sound and see a biped staring at you, looking, very quiet. He moves and you hide. The biped slams the books against the back of the shelf and you are pinned. Time passes and soon you feel a gloved hand on your tail. Light. The other hand, also gloved, catches the scurf of your neck. They you get a little drink and remember no more.

The moral of this story? Don’t hide behind things that can be moved by things bigger than you.

Appalling

Filed under: Rant — Tyler @ 10:58 pm

As everyone, I am appalled by the treatment of Iraqi at the hands of some of our soldiers. No one should be treated in that fashion under any circumstances. I am also appalled by the press’ treatment of it. I can see the need for people to what to see what has been done. Do we though need to see every single new batch of photos that come out? Are they going to broadcast the reported video if it is released? There needs to be a line drawn.

The topper for me today though was on the front page of the Boston Metro. It showed an middle-aged man obviously in grief being consoled by a younger man. The man crying in the photo was the father of the American who was beheaded in retaliation for treatment of Iraqi prisoners. The man consoling him was his remaining son. The caption stated that the photo was taken just after the father heard the horrid news. What’s wrong with this picture? What am I upset about this? THERE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN A CAMERA PRESENT!!! Grieving is a very private process. The father should be left with his family to come to grips with what has come to pass. If he wants to grieve publicly let him make that choice. My heart goes out to him, but I know that I would not want a press corps behind me if I heard that my off-spring had been viciously murdered.

I’ve not been this upset with the media since I saw local TV stations back in PA show the then State Treasure Bud Dwyre committing suicide during a press conference. “Oh, let’s show it again” they seem to be saying. At least they warned viewers that what they were about to show was not suitable for younger children. And you though the treatment Clinton’s bj got was bad.

No sense of humor

Apple apparently rejected an iMix entitled “One to Tango: Songs With a Masturbation Theme” because it was in “poor taste”. The Cult of Mac Blog has the source story. And here I though that you could share any experience via the Internet.

Miramax films was contracted to distribute the new Michael Moore film “Fahrenheit 911.” Disney, which I just found out bought Miramax 10 years ago (very sad), decided that it did not approve of the film and pulled the distribution. There is a clause in the purchasing contract that allows Disney to block films that it deems are “against its interests”. The full story is at BBC news. Think what you will of his work, the man in entitled to his opinion. Freedom of speech can not be invoked here as the issue is between two private parties (it is legal for private parties to relinquish constitutional rights). From the economics side Moore’s last film “Bowling for Columbine” made some good coin and got tons of press. Seems that Disney looks at more than the bottom line. In my opinion this is simply legal censorship. I do hope that Mr. Moore can find a way to release his film in the “free” United States of America.
